Lawmaker remanded in custody

Uganda’s former Security Minister Henry Tumukunde has been remanded in custody after appearing in a Kampala court on charges of treason. The East African reports that Tumukunde will return to court on 30 March. He was allegedly in possession of an unlicensed AK-47 rifle on 13 March. He pleaded not guilty. Tumukunde recently announced his intentions to run in the country's 2021 elections. He was arrested in a joint operation by Uganda police officers and members of the special force command. Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said the arrest was linked to his recent calls for Rwanda to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni.
