Ugandan lawmaker makes TIME's top 100 list

Ugandan MP Robert Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine, has made the inaugural TIME 100 Next list which recognises individuals who are revolutionising their respective fields and industries. Six Africans were selected. The magazine noted that Ssentamu, who is well-known as a singer, secured a seat in Parliament and set his sights on the Presidency. In July, he announced he would challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the next election. 'Eighty percent of our population is under the age of 35. They deserve a leader who works for the future of Uganda, not for himself,' he told TIME. A report on the allAfrica site notes that the 37-year-old is no stranger to controversy. Despite being jailed, beaten and charged with treason during his political career, he said Museveni 'fears the outcome of the 2021 elections'. The other Africans on the list are Nigerian rights activist Oluwaseun Osowobi, Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu, Nigerian artist Njideka Crosby, South Sudanese model Adut Akech, Nigerian chef Kwame Onwuachi and Ghanaian computer scientist Joy Buolamwini.
