Woman acquitted of poisoning step-daughters

A woman who is accused of poisoning her two step-daughters has been acquitted by a Kampala court which ruled that the children could have died from eating poisonous lima beans. Judge Yasin Nyanzi cleared Molly Nayiga of the unlawful deaths of Michelle and Vienna Nanyunja on 4 September 2014. This after an analysis from the government laboratory proved that there was no common poison in the samples they removed from bodies of the victims. However, The Monitor reports that Dr Sam Kalungi who carried out the postmortem had testified that the ‘chilli-red’ colour of the deceased’s blood gave an indication of cyanide poisoning. Nyanzi said compounds of cyanide poison were found in lima beans ‘and you need to cook them for about 10 minutes if you are to eat them’.
