Traditional Governance Bill overtaken

A 2017 Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Amendment Bill apparently requiring urgent attention according to its explanatory summary has taken so long to process that it has been overtaken by events. Its purpose was to extend the timeframes within which kingship, queenship and traditional councils should be established – and community authorities ‘disestablished’ – before the term of office of the National House of Traditional Leaders expired in August last year. The NCOP Committee on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs wants 12 more months added to the extension, so a revised Bill reflecting this will now need to be re-considered by the National Assembly committee concerned.
