Presidential term limits reinstated

Togo's Parliament has voted to reinstate the two-term limit for Presidents. However, the change does not apply to current leader Faure Gnassingbé. Legalbrief reports that Gnassingbé succeeded his father Eyadéma who served for 38 years, the longest in modern African history. BBC News reports that opposition lawmakers wanted the new cap to apply to the current leader, but the secret ballot saw proposal rejected. As a result, Gnassingbé will be eligible to run in future elections in 2020 and 2025 and could remain in power until 2030.
