The leader of Tanzania's main opposition Chadema party and 10 other members were arrested last week ahead of a planned conference to demand constitutional reform. Mwanza provincial authorities have banned public gatherings to contain the spread of the coronavirus. A report on the News24 site notes that Freeman Mbowe and the other members were detained in the port city of Mwanza. ‘These are signs that the dictatorship that existed during the rule of President John Magufuli continues,’ the party said in a statement. The arrests come four months after the appointments of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
