Comedian held over video clip
Popular Tanzanian comedian and former Big Brother Africa winner Idris Sultan is being held by police for allegedly bullying President John Magufuli. His lawyer, Bennedict Ishabakaki, yesterday said he has been charged with violating the country's controversial Cybercrimes Act. BBC News reports that a video clip showing the celebrity laughing at an old photograph of Magufuli went viral on social media in Tanzania. ‘I strongly believe, as a comedian, my client is only doing satire which can be political as well,’ Ishabakaki said. If convicted, the comedian could face imprisonment for at least three years or a fine of US$2 200.
