Government to address clampdown allegations

The authorities in Tanzania will study two reports released by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International which painted a bleak picture of the state of freedom of expression in the country. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, the rights groups say new laws passed since 2015, when President John Magufuli was elected, have ‘repressed’ independent reporting and restricted the work of the media, NGOs and opposition groups. Tanzania's Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Augsutine Mahiga told the BBC that the government will issue ‘a line by line response’ to the allegations.
