Government reviews controversial mobile money levy

The Tanzanian Government is reviewing a newly-imposed levy on mobile money following a public outcry. The tax, which took effect on 15 July after being approved by Parliament, imposes additional charges every time payments are sent or received via phones. However, Finance Minister Mwigulu Nchemba says President Samia Suluhu Hassan had instructed the Ministry to look into the matter. BBC News reports that he urged the public to remain calm. 'This is a legal matter and laws must be respected,' he said.
