First female CJ appointed

Sudan’s sovereign council has announced the appointment of Ne'imat Khair as Chief Justice and Taj Alhibir as Attorney-General of Sudan. Khair becomes the first woman to ever hold that position. Council spokesperson Mohammad Suleiman said the appointments were in keeping with the constitution and were published in the government gazette. A report on the allAfrica site notes that they will hold portfolios ‘congested with thorny issues and intricate problems’ while providing justice in the post Omal al-Bashir era. They will oversee the trials of the suspects of the 30 June, 1989 coup that turned the country from full democracy to autocratic rule. In addition, numerous corruption and financial mismanagement cases are also on the roll.
