Student in court over WhatsApp post

Publish date: 19 October 2020

University student Victor Majoni has been charged with insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa by allegedly uploading an ‘insulting’ cartoon character. New Zimbabwe reports that the case was brought by Zanu-PF official Remigious Komboni who said Majoni shared the WhatsApp post. ‘I sent him a message to warn him that he was out of line, but he ignored my advice,’ Komboni said. Majoni's lawyer, Nqobani Sithole, argued that there was ‘bad blood’ between the two because of their different political affiliations. ‘The Constitution provides for freedom of expression. Whoever designed the post is the one responsible for that content,’ he said. A ruling will be delivered on 9 November.
