Seven life terms for Cape Town gangster

Notorious Cape Town gangster George ‘Geweld’ Thomas, the alleged leader of the ruthless 28s prison gang, was sentenced to seven life terms and an additional 175 years for crimes ranging from murder to racketeering. After Western Cape High Court Judge Chantel Fortuin handed down the sentence, Thomas calmly waved to the public gallery before he was led out of the dock, says a report in The Times. Thomas and 18 other men faced 166 charges. One – Jason Stynder – was acquitted, six were sentenced to life imprisonment and the rest to between 12 and 25 years. Six witnesses were murdered during the trial. Others entered the witness protection programme.
