Popular musician found dead in police cell

Rwandan gospel music artist Kizito Mihigo has been found dead in a police cell, three days after he was arrested near the border with Burundi. Police accused him of attempting to flee the country and join rebel groups fighting against Rwanda. He was banned from leaving Rwanda because of a previous conviction. BBC News reports that police spokesperson JB Kabeera said Mihigo's body was found during a routine check by officers at Remera police station. He gave no further details. Mihigo's supporters say he had no intention of joining rebels in Burundi and he wanted to get to Belgium where he had lived previously. Legalbrief reports that the singer was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2015 after releasing a critical song challenging the official narrative of the genocide against Tutsis. He was pardoned in 2018.
