Rule of law tests for East African courts

Publish date: 05 May 2025
Issue Number: 1124
Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: Justice

May seems set to be a crucial testing period for justice and the rule of law in several East African countries. In her A Matter of Justice column on the Legalbrief site, Carmel Rickard explains that, though the month is barely a week old, there have already been a number of significant legal developments in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Rickard cites the case of Lydia Mugambe, former Ugandan UN judge who was convicted of modern slavery; an order by the Ugandan Human Rights Commission for the release of a prominent opposition figure, unlawfully detained by the defence force; and a constitutional challenge by the Mt Kenya Network Forum and the Indigenous People National Steering Committee on Climate Change to the President’s appointment of four people to the national climate change council, among other cases.
