Protests, curfew over student’s murder

Authorities in Nigeria's Sokoto state are enforcing a 24-hour curfew, imposed Saturday to quell protests demanding the release of suspects in the killing of college student Deborah Yakubu. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, Yakubu was beaten and burned by fellow students on Thursday for allegedly posting blasphemous comments about the Prophet Muhammad in a WhatsApp group. Voice of America reports that the curfew remains in place and churches and businesses are closed. Saturday's protests saw hundreds of residents demand the release of two suspects arrested by the police the day before in connection with the murder of Yakubu.
