Prominent lawyer assaulted by Zanu PF ‘thugs.’

A prominent Zimbabwe human rights lawyer who was attacked by suspected Zanu PF ‘thugs’ during parliamentary public hearings on the extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rule says he won’t stop fighting for the rights of ordinary citizens, reports News24. Lawyer Douglas Coltart was attacked at Harare City Sports Centre last week after being denied an opportunity to speak during the public hearings. His cellphone and spectacles were stolen during the scuffle. ‘I witnessed several incidents of people who were violently attacked by a group of men (Zanu PF thugs) who were moving around with a microphone. So I captured all that on my cellphone, and I believe they were monitoring me at that stage, and it angered them.’ He said that as he was holding his phone, a Zanu PF central committee member grabbed his phone and knocked him to the ground. That’s when he was assaulted by a mob and racial slurs were hurled at him. Mnangagwa’s second term is supposed to end in 2028, but through this Bill, it will be extended by two years to 2030.
