Port official gets bail in major graft case

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) finance manager Patrick Nyoike has been granted US$19 000 bail after denying graft charges in US$2m graft case. Nyoike, who was arrested on Sunday alongside his wife, Jacinta Wambugu and KPA clerical officer Isaac Obunga, was arraigned before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti. Two other accused people in the case, Alfred Hinga and Peter Kinyanjui, did not appear in court because they are still in Nairobi. The accused allegedly ‘unlawfully handled’ the payment which was made to Nyali Capital Limited by KPA. CapitalFM reports that Nyoike’s wife is the general manager of the company while Hinga and Kinyanjui are the directors. Nyoike and Obunga have also been charged with abuse of office for approving Nyali Capital Limited as a vendor without following due procedure.
