Pope addresses Chagos Islands dispute

Pope Francis has said the UK should comply with a UN resolution demanding that it return control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The former UK colony says it was forced to give up the Indian Ocean archipelago – now a British overseas territory – in 1965 in exchange for independence. 'It is true that not all things that are right for humanity are also right for our pockets but international institutions must be obeyed,' the pontiff said. In February, the International Court of Justice ruled that the islands were not lawfully separated from the former colony of Mauritius. BBC News reports that he was speaking on an aircraft following a three-nation trip to Africa. His last stop was in Mauritius, where many Chagossians live after being evicted from the islands.
