Owner of Kampala cosmetics company fined

Kampala businesswoman Maria Namwanje has been fined $8 000 after she pleaded guilty to five counts of dealing in counterfeit products. Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) legal officer,Caroline Agonzibwa said Namwanje’s company, Sure Deal, has been selling products that contain hydroquinone and had used the UNBS quality mark illegally. New Vision reports that he hydroquinone is a depigmenting agent used to lighten dark skin. Agonzibwa said the bureau had entered into a plea-bargain with Namwanje to secure a non-custodial sentence.
