Outrage over church murder
There has been widespread outrage over the rape and murder of a young woman in a Nigerian church. Uwaila Omozuwa was attacked as she studied in the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Benin City on 27 May. Church spokesperson Olaitan Olubiyi said the 22-year-old was a member of the choir who had studied privately at the church since lockdown measures due to the coronavirus pandemic were implemented in March. Olubiya told CNN that a guard ‘found her in a pool of her own blood and half-naked in the church hall’. She died in hospital three days later. Amnesty International Nigeria has issued a statement calling for a stronger government response.
