NPA resolves to reinstate Malema charges

National Prosecuting Authority sources say a decision has been made to reinstate charges against Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema as soon as his co-accused Kagisho Dichabe, who is in hospital, recovers, says a News24 report. It notes the decision was taken last week after the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shaun Abrahams, called an impromptu marathon meeting of the NPA’s section heads. The NPA resolved not to arrest Dichabe but to put the matter back on the court roll as soon as he was fit to stand trial. Malema, Dichabe and businessman Lesiba Gwangwa were up for 55 charges of corruption, fraud, money laundering and racketeering. Judge Billy Mothle in the Gauteng High Court (Pretoria), sitting in Polokwane, struck Malema’s case off the roll last week after it had dragged on for three years, the report notes.
