Anti-graft agency commended for recovering billions

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had made ‘remarkable progress’ in Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight, revealing the agency has secured more than 7 000 convictions and recovered assets worth over ₦500bn ($342 580 729) in just two years, according to Business Insider. Tinubu said his administration remained firmly committed to strengthening institutions tasked with curbing graft and noted that the recovered proceeds of crime had been redirected to fund key social initiatives, including the newly launched Students Loan and Consumer Credit schemes. ‘The EFCC has demonstrated that the fight against corruption is winnable,’ Tinubu said. ‘But success will only be sustained if all arms of government work together to promote transparency and accountability.’ He emphasised that the judiciary remains central to the anti-graft drive, warning that the battle against corruption would lose credibility if public officials and judges failed to lead by example. ‘We cannot claim to have excelled in transparency if we do not live by such examples,’ he said.
