Senate to probe Amnesty International findings

Nigeria’s Senate has resolved to probe Amnesty International’s report which accused the military of human rights abuses and rape of women in Internally Displaced Persons Camps. It has set up a seven-man ad hoc committee to look into the allegations and report back to the Senate in two weeks. THISDAY reports that the ad hoc committee is headed by Senator David Umaru, chair of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, Amnesty claims that women and children who survived the brutal rule of Boko Haram militants faced further abuse by the military in the camps. ‘As a democracy, we have a twin obligation to prosecute the war against terror and in every possible way protect and defend the fundamental rights of Nigerians,’ said Senator Shehu Sani.
