Police raid ‘baby factory’
Lagos police have freed 19 females, many of whom had been abducted and impregnated by captors planning to sell their babies. The victims, aged between 15 to 28, had been brought from all over Nigeria with promises of work. Four babies were also found. A report on the IoL site notes that ‘baby factories’, as such premises are widely known, are most common in parts of eastern Nigeria. ‘The girls were tricked with employment as domestic staff in Lagos,’ said police spokesman Bala Elkana. He added that the raid took place on 19 September but had been kept under wraps to enable the police to apprehend suspects. Two women were arrested and police are looking for a third suspect. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, another high-profile raise occurred at an Islamic school in the northern city of Kaduna. About 400 boys and men, many of whom had been tortured were rescued.
