Doctors suspend lengthy strike

Striking doctors in Nigeria's public hospitals have suspended their two-month-long industrial action. The labour action, by resident doctors who are training to be specialists, almost crippled the health sector. Their union said it was giving the government another chance to meet its demands. BBC News reports that they withdrew their services over complaints about poor pay and allowances as well as a lack of insurance cover. The strike's suspension follows the intervention of the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association, the umbrella body for all doctors. It said it would help the resident doctors push for the resolution of their grievances with the government.
