Nigeria recovers more Abacha loot

The UK's National Crime Agency has announced the recovery of a further $23.5m in looted funds from the allies and family of former Nigerian dictator, the late Sani Abacha. Legalbrief reports that Abacha diverted millions of dollars from Nigeria's central bank to overseas bank accounts of his family and associates in the 1990s. According to UK's crime agency website, the funds were retrieved as part of a wider pool of funds identified by the US Department of Justice as having been stolen out of Nigeria in the 1990s by Abacha and his accomplices. A report on the allAfrica site notes that Nigeria has previously recovered several other tranches of Abacha loot, including $308m laundered by Kebbi State governor, Abubakar Bagudu, from Jersey. The Nigerian Government is yet to react.
