Murder accused arrested in Brazil
Gerhard Jansen van Vuuren, a murder accused who fled his trial, has been apprehended after three months while using a false passport in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Beeld reports.
The 32-year old is accused of the murder of his ex-girlfriend Andrea Venter (25) in front of her complex in Fourways, Johannesburg. She obtained a protection order against him at one point, but Jansen van Vuuren (32) went to her house, allegedly called her outside and beat her with a knuckle-duster before stabbing her to death. He then tried to slit his own throat. After several failed bail attempts, the South Gauteng High Court eventually granted him bail. The weekend before his trial was scheduled to start, he fled. Attorney Chris Watters reportedly told the paper that South Africa does not have an extradition treaty with Brazil. Full Beeld report
