Government to spend millions rebuilding courts

Mozambique is expected to spend about $4m to rehabilitate or rebuild eight court buildings which were vandalised during the violent post-election demonstrations. According to the President of the Supreme Court, Adelino Muchanga, specialised teams remain on the ground assessing the damage caused to 19 affected facilities across the country, reports Club of Mozambique. So far, it is known that the restoration of the eight newly constructed buildings will cost around $500 000 each. ‘Some buildings are recoverable, but others will require major intervention. Many of them were vandalised or completely destroyed…,’ said Muchanga. He added that numerous files were also destroyed during the protests and suggested that there would be huge difficulties in rebuilding cases. ‘The physical count is still being carried out to understand the true extent of the losses, but we are also in the process of reforming the records.' He indicted that citizens whose files had been destroyed were seeking to be pardoned.
