Mother off the hook in Windhoek murder case

Namibia’s Prosecutor-General has decided not to prosecute the mother of a Zimbabwean girl whose burnt body was discovered in a rubbish dump in Windhoek two years ago. After two years in police custody, Rachael Kureva (39) has been informed that she will not stand trial over the death of Akundaishe Chipomho (9) who was killed in Windhoek on 23 or 24 January 2020. However, fellow Zimbabweans Edward and Caroline Nkata will be prosecuted in the Windhoek High Court on six charges relating to the case. The Namibian reports that the couple is facing charges of murder, defeating or obstructing the course of justice, attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, fraud and remaining in Namibia after the expiry of their visitor entry permits. Kureva, her daughter, the Nkata couple and their children lived together in a flat in Rhino Park area before the incident. During her first court appearance in January 2020, Caroline Nkata implicated her husband in the murder. Magistrate Celma Amadhila informed the couple that they must appear in the High Court for a first pre-trial hearing on 17 February.
