Zimbabwe’s award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin'ono is being sued for US$100 000 for alleged defamation by President Emmerson Mnangagwa's lawyer. New Zimbabwe reports that Tinomudaishe Chinyoka claims Chin’ono labelled him as ‘ignorant’ on Twitter and Facebook on 29 April. Both the tweet and the Facebook post contained a link to a five-minute video in which a person identified as Zanu-PF official Bright Matonga claimed a law passed in 2016 justified Chin’ono’s arrest. Legalbrief reports that Chin’ono was arrested this year after he had posted a tweet that allegedly ‘falsely’ reported the death of a child after a physical assault by the police in Harare. Police refuted the claim.
