Publish date: 12 April 2021

Zimbabwe Mining Federation president Henrietta Rushwaya has given the state notice that she will challenge her detention if not provided with a trial date at her next court appearance. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, she is accused of allegedly trying to smuggle 6kg of gold to Dubai last year. She was detained at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport before boarding her flight. New Zimbabwe reports that she denies the charges and insists she mistakenly took the wrong handbag from her home. She added that she holds a gold collector’s licence. Rushwaya, who has been charged with businessmen Ali Mohammad, Gift Karanda and Stephen Tserayi, will return to court on 5 May.
