AG accused of protecting lawmakers

Attorney-General Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda has been accused of protecting Malawi's politicians after announcing an amnesty for people accused of defrauding the government. Chakaka-Nyirenda announced that for the next two months, anyone who admitted carrying out fraud or corruption would not face prosecution provided they returned the money. This comes as Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau is seeking to arrest the Land Minister Kezzie Msukwa over a multi-m i l l i o n dollar fraud case involving prominent businessman Zuneth Sattar. BBC News reports that both men have denied any wrongdoing. The head of Malawi's Centre for Democracy and Economic Development, Sylvester Namiwa, said the announcement of the amnesty showed the AG was politically compromised and he called for him to resign. Government's chief legal adviser Chakaka Nyirenda said his office was working with the UK Government to recover any money that might have been illicitly transferred from Malawi.
