Sex workers object to curfew

Malawian sex workers have marched in the streets of the capital against a government decision to impose a night curfew and close bars which they say have serious economic implications on their lives. They are urging the authorities to review the decisions and allow them to operate normally because they provide ‘essential services’. The New Times reports that the Lilongwe District Commissioner refused to receive their petition, forcing them to approach the city council. Zinenani Majawa, director of the Female Sex Workers' Association, said the on-going street protests were also meant to address stigma related to sex work. These include abuse by police.
