Court clears way for Rastafarian pupils

The Zomba High Court has ordered the Malawian Government to allow Rastafarian students with dreadlocks to attend school. The order was given in a case filed by an eight-year-old pupil who was denied admission to a primary school because of her hair. The Nyasa Times reports that Justice Zione Ntaba ordered the Blantyre Girls Primary School to admit Makeda Mbewe and offer her extra classes to make up for the days she missed. Rastafarians in Malawi have frequently accused the authorities of discriminating against them.
