Poll re-run date announced

Embattled Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson Jane Ansah has announced that the presidential election re-run ordered by the Constitutional Court will be held on 2 July. The Nyasa Times reports that Ansah told a news conference in Blantyre that a voter registration process will be held between 4 April and 7 June. In a landmark ruling last month, the court overturned the outcome of the May 2019 election which handed President Peter Mutharika a second term in office. Mutharika and the electoral body are appealing the ruling and the matter will be heard in the Supreme Court from 15 April. The election was marred by widespread irregularities. The commission says all political parties and aspiring candidates should submit the names of monitors for voter registration by 30 March.
