‘If Iran ever needed to return to the old school forms of international terrorism, it's highly likely that they would look for low hanging fruit, where there are softer, easier targets.'

– Analyst Phillip Smyth after Nigerian police were placed on ‘red alert’ over the killing of Iranian military commander Qassim Soleimani.

‘The barbarity that characterises these attacks – including the beheading of women and children with machetes, the dismemberment and removal of body parts of the victims as trophies of war – reflects the desire of the attackers to inflict lasting trauma to the Hema communities and to force them to flee and not return to their villages.'

– The UN Joint Human Rights Office which has documented a range of atrocities, including the raping of women, the killing of school children and looting and burning of villages in the DRC.

‘The dire and incalculable consequences of the insidious violence of corruption that has led to the deprivation of a chance for millions of South Africans to reclaim their human dignity is a gross violation of human rights. – Psychologist Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela

‘The state, through its companies (diamond marketing company) Sodiam and Sonangol, transferred enormous quantities of foreign currency to companies abroad whose beneficiaries are the defendants, without receiving the agreed return,’ the court said. ‘The defendants recognise the existence of the debt but allege that they do not have the means to pay.’

– An Angolan court order freezing of assets of Isabel dos Santos, daughter of the country’s former leader.

‘We know only too well the enormity of the challenges that confront us, but we are united in the knowledge that we have the means and the determination to overcome them. Just as the strongest steel is forged in fire, just as diamonds are forged deep inside the earth's crust under the most extreme pressure, let us turn adversity into opportunity. In doing so, let us each play our part: for upon the conduct of each depends the fate of all.’

– President Cyril Ramaphosa
