Compulsory plastics levy introduced

The Ministry of Environment & Forestry and the Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to introduce a compulsory plastic levy to try to curb pollution in the country. According to the Lesotho Times, the plastic levy aims to reduce plastic waste, incentivise recycling efforts and promote sustainable alternatives. Minister of Environment & Forestry Letsema Adonts’I expressed the government’s concern over the adverse effects of plastic usage on the environment. Adonts’i outlined various government initiatives to combat plastic pollution, including the ‘Boloka Lesotho’ campaign that encouraged citizens to maintain a clean living environment. The MOU was a critical step in formalising collaboration between government Ministries to ensure effective implementation of the plastic levy.
