Rape ordeals relived

Publish date: 14 June 2021

Two Kenyan women who say they were raped by security guards in Kakuzi have spoken out about their ordeals. Their claims come as the Kakuzi agri-business seeks to sue rights groups over what it says are false allegations of abuse. Critics say the lawsuit is aimed at winning back contracts recently lost in a UK supermarket boycott. BBC News reports that Marium Wanja says she bore two children after being raped by Kakuzi security guards in the 1990s. And Mudhikwa Musau said she reported her rape to police in 2009 but never heard about the case again. Last year, UK supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury's and Lidl boycotted Kakuzi, suspending all orders for their products. This after a lawsuit representing 79 Kenyans was lodged in the UK High Court. The plaintiffs are represented by UK law firm Leigh Day.
