Judge slams former President for land grab

A Kenyan court has ordered former President Daniel arap Moi to pay $10.5m in compensation to a widow for illegally seizing her land. Justice Anthony Ombwayo ruled that Moi transferred 53 acres of Susan Chelugui’s land to himself. BBC News reports that her husband Noah Chelugui was a local chief during Moi's term in office. The property was illegally grabbed 36 years ago, but only transferred to Moi's name in 2007. Moi, who remains Kenya's longest-serving leader, was accused by Chelugui and her son David of transferring their family land into his name two years after Noah died. The report notes that Moi was unable to provide the court with any evidence of how he came to possess the land. Ombwayo described Moi’s behaviour as 'unconstitutional, irregular, unprocedural and tainted'.
