Guinean national cleared in Canadian assault case

An African university student in Canada who was wrongly arrested and detained for six days has received support for permanent residency from Parliament. BBC News reports that the House of Commons has unanimously voted to recommend that Guinean Mamadi Camara be granted a residence permit following his ordeal. The 31-year-old PhD student was accused of attacking a police officer but was later exonerated after surveillance footage showed that someone else was at the scene when the assault occurred. Two days later, Montreal's police chief Sylvain Caron publicly apologised to him and his family and said that DNA evidence had cleared him as a suspect.
