Government fined over death in custody

A Ugandan court has ordered the government to pay $6 700 as compensation to Joyce Namata, the mother of Ronald Bikyahaga who was killed in police custody in 2007. BBC News reports that Bikyahaga was beaten and tortured at the Nabbingo police station after he was arrested at a cinema. Justice Musa Ssekaana said the police force ‘was vicariously liable’. A recent auditor’s report reveals that government currently owes $176m in court awards.
