Courts grind to a halt

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has asked the government to take immediate steps to address the concerns of striking judiciary workers. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, the Judicial Service Staff Association embarked on a strike on the Friday before last after protracted salary negotiations stalled. Government says the staff did not follow laid-down procedure for embarking on strike as stipulated by the Labour Act. My Joy Online reports that the GBA has urged Accra to ‘expedite action on all matters relating to the implementation of the consolidation of salaries of staff of the judicial service once and for all’. GBA president Benson Nutsukpui expressed concern over the adverse effect the strike will have on the administration of justice. ‘The adjudication of cases nationwide has been rendered impossible and all work in our courts has virtually ground to a halt since the commencement of the strike action,’ he added.
