Former Guinea Prime Minister faces fraud charges

Guinea will prosecute former Prime Minister Ibrahima Kassory Fofana over the alleged embezzlement of more than $4m in public funds intended for economic, political and social programmes, the Justice Ministry said, according to an African Insider report. Fofana is also being investigated for allegedly embezzling more than $40m in Covid aid. Justice Minister Alphonse Charles Wright said in a letter to the Prosecutor-General the accusations related to payments of 41bn Guinean francs ($4.7m) and $400 000 made in 2020. Wright also ordered proceedings against Fofana’s former special adviser, Ansoumane Camara, and several former officials at the National Agency for Economic and Social Inclusion , a government agency, over the same accusations. Fofana served as prime minister under ex-president Alpha Conde from May 2018 until September 2021, when the army ousted the elected government in a coup. The former Premier has been detained since April over fraud charges.
