Former CJ takes aim at Kenyatta

Retired Chief Justice David Maraga says President Uhuru Kenyatta should have been impeached for allegedly violating the Constitution. Kenyatta reportedly ignored instructions to appoint 40 judges who were recruited by the Judicial Service Commission. The High Court (Nairobi) last month ruled that the appointment of chief administrative secretaries was illegal, but they have continued to carry out their duties. The Daily Nation reports that Maraga, who left office in January, said Parliament should have taken steps to remove Kenyatta. The former CJ said when he was in office, there were suggestions from the executive to swear-in some of the 40 judges and reject those who were said to be ‘tainted’. ‘If I allowed that, I would have violated the Constitution and given the President liberty to violate the Constitution and set a bad precedent. He would have gotten a free hand to choose,’ he stated.
