Former air force commander guilty of corruption

A Zambian court has convicted the country's former air force commander of corruption.

The Citizen reports that Lieutenant-General Andrew Sakala was found guilty of pocketing $250 000 earmarked for covert security ahead of the 2011 elections. The Lusaka court found military commanders General Wisdom Lopa and General Anthony Yeta not guilty on the same charges. 'The prosecution has failed to prove the case against the two accused persons and I therefore acquit them,' Magistrate Wilfred Muma said. Legalbrief reports that Sakala received a five-year jail term with hard labour on Friday. Full report in The Citizen
