Journalist gets bail in ‘fake news’ case

A prominent Egyptian journalist has been released on bail after he was arrested on allegations of insulting the police. Khairy Ramadan was detained on Sunday last week after he allegedly discussed the low salaries paid to policemen on his television show. BBC News reports that the prosecutor's office said it would monitor news outlets and social media which publish ‘lies and false news’. Cairo has demanded that the BBC apologise for a report on state torture, which the government said was 'an absolute falsification and fabrication’. However, the media house said it ‘stands by the integrity of its reporting teams’.
