Egypt and Morocco linked to Fifa scandal

It’s been another extraordinary week in the world of international football as the bribery scandal that has ripped through the heart of Fifa continues to spread. Legalbrief reports that South Africa – the host nation of the 2010 World Cup – has come under fierce scrutiny following the arrest of Jack Warner, the governing body’s former vice-president who is accused of securing a $10m bribe. In another dramatic development, Warner has been accused of asking Egypt for a $7m bribe for votes to host the 2010 event. The Citizen notes that Egypt’s former Sports Minister Aley Eddine Helal said Warner asked Egypt in 2004 to pay the bribe in exchange for seven votes to host the 2010 World Cup. ‘Warner was the one who approached us from Fifa. He said he could guarantee us seven votes… He asked for one million dollars for each vote,’ claimed Helal, who said Warner’s offer had been rebuffed, according to the report. Trinidad and Tobago yesterday (Sunday) reiterated that Warner should turn himself in to US authorities. ‘We expect the authorities to take actions as the evidence comes,’ said Justice and Legal Affairs Minister Prakash Ramadhar. A report on the Sport24 site notes that he said the government cannot meddle in that probe.
