Decriminalising sex work a no-no - Deputy Minister

The Herald reports moves to decriminalise s ex work may come to nothing if comments by Justice Deputy Minister John Jeffery are anything to go by.

Last week, Jeffery told a meeting in Johannesburg to address HIV infection among s ex workers that decriminalising s ex work could have negative consequences for the country. 'We don't want to encourage s ex work. We don't want to invite people from other countries to come to SA to try and earn their trade in this way,' he said. 'We also don't want SA to be seen as a s ex work tourist venue.' According to the report, Social Development Deputy Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu also warned the s ex workers that their trade was still illegal. Bogopane-Zulu was attending the HIV Prevention and Treatment Programme for S ex Workers meeting hosted by funders The Global Fund and the South African National Aids Council.
