Court suspends medical strike

A Nairobi court has suspended the ongoing medical strike for 60 days. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, the country’s health services have been paralysed in hospitals in 23 counties after nurses protested against salary delays and the non-implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiated in November 2017. The Daily Nation reports that the Council of Governors chairman Wycliffe Oparanya said the court ordered nurses and their employers to attend conciliation meetings initiated by the government. However, the Kenya National Union of Nurses Secretary-General Seth Panyako dismissed calls for mediation. ‘We shall only engage in negotiations if the agenda is grading structures and harmonising salaries,’ he said.
