Court refuses to summon Museveni in defamation case

Publish date: 08 July 2019

Kampala magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu has refused to summon President Yoweri Museveni to testify in the trial of Stella Nyanzi who has been charged with ‘cyber harassment and offensive communication’. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, the former university researcher was charged under the Computer Misuse Act after publishing Facebook posts in which she criticised Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni. Kamasanyu said she would be acting in breach of the Constitution if she accepted the defence's application. The Monitor reports that Nyanzi’s defence lawyers have presented a list of 16 witnesses. Amnesty International has urged the Ugandan authorities to drop the ‘absurd’ case.
